ChatGPT for Content Writing and SEO

ChatGPT for Content Writing and SEO?

December 16, 2022

ChatGPT is a cutting-edge natural language processing (NLP) tool developed by OpenAI.

It is a version of the well-known GPT-3 language model, which has been trained on a huge set of human conversations and can respond to text input in a way that sounds like a person. It is said that the entire training set was around 45 Terabytes.

One of the most essential features of the Language Model of ChatGPT is its ability to comprehend and adapt to the situation. This implies that when you chat to ChatGPT, it will remember what you said previously and utilize that knowledge to provide more relevant and logical replies.

This lets people talk in a more natural way and makes ChatGPT a powerful tool that can be used in many ways.

The quality of ChatGPT content is astounding, many call it a Game Changer in the IT Industry. The idea of using ChatGPT for Content Writing and SEO should be addressed.

ChatGPT is challenging Google’s dominance in the search engine field with a radically new approach based on Machine Learning. Instead of providing links to websites with the information, ChatGPT provides the answers on its pages.

ChatGPT and SEO is a powerful combination that can revolutionize the way you approach search engine optimization. Thanks to OpenAI automation, you can say goodbye to tedious and time-consuming SEO work and focus on other aspects of your business. Not only does ChatGPT make it easy to generate high-quality content, it also helps you identify and target the effective keywords for your website.

Let’s explore…

Who Developed ChatGPT?

ChatGPT has been developed by OpenAI, a leading research institute based in San Francisco focused on the development of artificial intelligence.

OpenAI was founded by a group of individuals that includes Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, John Schulman, and Ilya Sutskever. The company was founded in 2015 with the goal of promoting and advancing the development of artificial intelligence in a safe and responsible manner. Since its inception, OpenAI has become a leading research institute in the field of AI, with a focus on developing advanced AI technologies and applications.

OpenAI is well-known for its work on language processing and other AI technologies. It has made a number of popular tools and models, like DALL-E and GPT-3, which ChatGPT is based on. DALL-E and DALL-E 2 are deep learning models developed by OpenAI to generate digital images from natural language descriptions, called “prompts”. DALL-E was revealed in January 2021, and uses a version of GPT-3 modified to generate images.

The goal of OpenAI is to make AI better and to create technologies that can help make the world a better place.

Different Applications of ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a natural language processing (NLP) tool that can be used in countless different ways. Some ways that ChatGPT could be used are:

ChatGPT could give content writers ideas and suggestions to help them get past writer’s block and come up with new ideas. It even can write entire articles or blog posts or just generate ideas for human writers.

ChatGPT could be used to help doctors and nurses by providing them information about a patient’s medical history, current symptoms, and possible diagnoses in real time.

Education: ChatGPT could help students learn better by giving them immediate feedback and personalized answers. It can explain complicated material in all detail or summarize it for a 10-year-old child.

Researchers could use it to get real-time information and ideas to help them come up with hypotheses and plan experiments.

Customer service: ChatGPT could be used to power chatbots that answer customers’ questions right away, cutting down on wait times and provide suggestions.

ChatGPT could be used to translate text from one language to another in real time and with high accuracy in the future.

Storytelling: Based on what the user says, ChatGPT could help create interesting and immersive stories by suggesting dialogue and plot twists in several writing styles.

Personal assistants: ChatGPT could be used to power virtual assistants that can help with things like scheduling, sending reminders, and giving information.

These are just a few of the many ways ChatGPT could be used. As NLP technology keeps getting better, ChatGPT and other tools like it are likely to be used in a wide range of industries and situations.

Why ChatGPT Can Do What It Does

Stanford University writes about how an increase in training data enabled GPT-3 to translate text from English to French, even though it wasn’t specifically trained to do that task. GPT-3 has 175 billion parameters and was trained on 570 gigabytes of text. For comparison, its predecessor, GPT-2, was over 100 times smaller, at 1.5 billion parameters. GPT-3.5 – the foundation of ChatGPT – was trained with 45 Terabytes of Data!

Large language models like GPT-3 aren’t taught to do specific things.

They receive education in a broad range of subjects, which enables them to use what they’ve learned in several fields.

This is like how a person learns something. For example, if someone learns the basics of carpentry, they can use that knowledge to make a table, even if they were never taught how to make a table in particular.

The GPT-3 operates in a manner that is analogous to that of the human brain in that it stores information that is universal in nature and may be utilized for a variety of purposes.

The Stanford University Whitepaper on GPT-3 explains:

“Unlike chess engines, which solve a specific problem, humans are “generally” intelligent and can learn to do anything from writing poetry to playing soccer to filing tax returns.

In contrast to most current AI systems, GPT-3 is edging closer to such general intelligence…”

InstructGPT, which is a part of ChatGPT, is another huge language model that was developed by OpenAI to receive instructions from humans and provide long-form replies to complicated queries.

ChatGPT can receive instructions to write an essay on nearly any subject and perform the task in whatever manner that is provided because of its capacity to follow instructions.

It is capable of composing an essay while adhering to the limits such as the word count and the inclusion of particular topic elements.

Some Things to Know About ChatGPT

ChatGPT can write articles on almost any topic because it has been trained on a wide range of publicly available text.

But ChatGPT has some limits that you should know about before deciding to use it for a SEO project.

The biggest problem is that ChatGPT can’t be trusted to provide accurate information right now. It’s sometimes wrong because the model only predicts what words should come after the last word in a sentence in a paragraph about a certain topic. It doesn’t care about getting things right.

This should be the most important thing for anyone who wants to make high-quality content.

1. Programmed to Avoid Certain Kinds of Content

For instance, ChatGPT has been designed to avoid generating text on potentially hazardous themes including graphic violence, explicit sexual material, and directions on how to construct explosive devices. This behavior is the result of careful programming on the part of the developers.

2. Not up-to-date on current events

Another one of its shortcomings is that the version that is now in use is unaware of any material that was produced after the year 2021.

Therefore, if the content you provide has to be current and relevant, the version of ChatGPT that is in December 2022 available may not be beneficial to you.

3. Built-in Biases

It is taught to be helpful, genuine, and harmless, which is an essential restriction to be aware of.

These aren’t merely ideas; they’re deliberate prejudices embedded into the mechanism.

It appears that the programming to be innocuous prevents the output from being negative.

That’s a positive thing, but it also gently shifts the piece away from being neutral.

In a sense, one must take the wheel and directly instruct ChatGPT to drive in the desired direction.

4. ChatGPT Requires Detailed Instructions

ChatGPT requires detailed instructions in order to output a higher quality content that has a greater chance of being highly original or take a specific perspective.

The more instructions it is given, the more sophisticated the output will be.

This is both a strength and a limitation to be aware of.

The fewer instructions there are in the request for content, the more likely that the output will share a similar output with another request.

ChatGPT is designed to choose completely random words when predicting what the next word in an article should be, so it makes sense that it doesn’t plagiarize itself.

But the fact that similar requests generate similar articles highlights the limitations of simply asking “give me this. ”

5. Can ChatGPT Content Be Identified?

Researchers at Google and other organizations have for many years worked on algorithms for successfully detecting AI-generated content.

You can find many research papers on this topic, one of these is from March 2022 that used output from GPT-2 and GPT-3.

The research white paper is titled, Adversarial Robustness of Neural-Statistical Features in Detection of Generative Transformers (PDF).

The researchers were testing to see what kind of analysis could detect AI-generated content that employed algorithms designed to evade detection.

They tested strategies such as using BERT algorithms to replace words with synonyms, another one that added misspellings, among other strategies.

What they discovered is that some statistical features of the AI-generated text such as Gunning-Fog Index and Flesch Index scores were useful for predicting whether a text was computer generated.

Tools like the GPT Dectector, which were made by the AI Community Project Hugging Face together with OpenAI, can tell if someone used chatgpt to write their content. When you change content that was already made by a computer, for example with another AI tool, it becomes much harder to tell if it was made by a computer or a person. Here you can learn more about How to detect ChatGPT Output.

6. Invisible Watermarking?

Of more interest is that OpenAI researchers have developed cryptographic watermarking that will aid in detection of content created through an OpenAI product like ChatGPT.

A recent article called attention to a discussion by an OpenAI researcher which is available on a video titled, Scott Aaronson Talks AI Safety.

The researcher states that ethical AI practices such as watermarking can evolve to be an industry standard in the way that Robots.txt became a standard for ethical crawling.

He stated:

“…we’ve seen over the past 30 years that the big Internet companies can agree on certain minimal standards, whether because of fear of getting sued, desire to be seen as a responsible player, or whatever else.

One simple example would be robots.txt: if you want your website not to be indexed by search engines, you can specify that, and the major search engines will respect it.

In a similar way, you could imagine something like watermarking—if we were able to demonstrate it and show that it works and that it’s cheap and doesn’t hurt the quality of the output and doesn’t need much compute and so on—that it would just become an industry standard, and anyone who wanted to be considered a responsible player would include it.”

The researcher used cryptography to create the watermarking. Anyone with the key can test a document to see if it has the digital watermark that shows it was made by an AI.

The code can be something like how punctuation is used or what words are chosen.

He talked about what watermarking is and why it’s important:

“(…) We want it to be much harder to take a GPT output and pass it off as if it came from a human.

This could be helpful for preventing academic plagiarism, obviously, but also, for example, mass generation of propaganda—you know, spamming every blog with seemingly on-topic comments supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, without even a building full of trolls in Moscow.

Or impersonating someone’s writing style in order to incriminate them.

These are all things one might want to make harder, right?”

The researcher shared that watermarking defeats algorithmic efforts to evade detection.

He also stated that it is still possible to defeat the watermarking:

“Now, this can all be defeated with enough effort.

For example, if you used another AI to paraphrase GPT’s output—well okay, we’re not going to be able to detect that.”

The researcher announced that the goal is to roll out watermarking in a future release of GPT.

Can You Use AI for SEO Purposes?

AI Content is in theory Detectable

Many people say that there’s no way to know if content was generated using AI.

Others say that detecting machine-generated content has been a subject of research going back many years, including research on how to detect content that was translated from another language.

My opinion is that even AI Scientist say that it is almost impossible to identify artificially generated content if it gets further treatment like for example rephrasing. Which can be done by a human writer or by one of the many tools out there, for example Quillbot or LanguageTool. Nevertheless, interesting tools like the AI Community Hugging Face GPT Detector can predict with a very high probability if a (not further modified) text output was generated by ChatGPT or not.

Autogenerated Content Violates Google’s Guidelines

Google said many times that AI-generated content violates Google’s guidelines. Keep this in mind when ChatGPT write essays for you and Google is still a thing (you can easily think of ChatGPT in the future to be a Google Replacement).

ChatGPT May at Some Point Contain a Watermark

OpenAI researcher said that watermarking was “hopefully” coming in the next version of GPT.

ChatGPT may at some point become upgraded with watermarking, if it isn’t already watermarked. In my personal opinion, this would be a bad business decision for OpenAI since they eliminate their own business case with this decision.

The Best Use of AI for SEO

The greatest application of AI tools is for growing SEO in a way that increases worker productivity. This generally entails delegating the laborious task of research and analysis to the AI. ChatGPT can for example do the Keyword Research or analyze Backlinks for a Website.

Keyword Research via ChatGPT

Yet, it has no access to the Internet but definitely this can only be a matter of time.

Summarizing webpages to build a meta description may be an allowed usage, since Google expressly states that it is not prohibited. Handing off content creation to an AI and publishing it as-is might not be the most effective use of AI if it isn’t first reviewed for quality, accuracy and helpfulness.

So using ChatGPT for content writing without any further modifications afterwards might be risky and cannot be recommended. In conclusion, ChatGPT and SEO is a powerful combination that can revolutionize the way you approach search engine optimization.
